Dandelion Letters: October 2024
What has our indie press been up to, and what have we been loving lately?
Dear Dandelions,
Greetings from us to you!
With the arrival of October comes the arrival of fresh, golden air and early twilights. As our shadows grow longer during dusk walks, we can’t help but notice how the autumn moon shines brighter for us these days. Windows and street lights twinkle around and, amongst the crisp air of this new season, we have an inclination to reach for thick sweaters and cook steaming stew that’ll warm us from the inside out. In the words of Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
The changing of seasons brings a new excitement to our work here at Dandelion Revolution Press. We’re thrilled to bring back our monthly newsletter “Dandelion Letters,” so you can expect this to land in your inbox on the first of each month.
Our Wildflower Whispers section will give you a peek into what our indie press has been up to over the last month, and our Fresh Finds will showcase any books, SubStacks, short stories, and podcasts we’ve been loving lately.
So let’s get started, shall we?
Our latest call for submissions closed on September 30th, which means October will be a fun & full month of reading for our team! (2024 has brought on some new incredible team members. Get to know us here.)
We’re forever grateful to the authors who submit to us. You’re the reason we’re able to do this work four years on. We hope to have a response for our authors in November, and start sharing pieces with readers in December!
Make sure you’re subscribed so our stories and personal essays can be delivered straight to your inbox. This way, you’ll never miss future Calls for Submissions and Dandelion Letters, too!
Since our transition to fully online issues, we want to share some cool features we’ve introduced:
You can always find our full PDF issue on our Website, or you can come to the DRP SubStack to find each individual piece.
Authors now have the ability to read their stories aloud. Listen to Anu Mahadev’s “Sapodilla – the soap apple seed speaks” and Paige Gardner’s “What Comes After.”
We will be sharing some “Story Behind the Story” blog posts and Author Interviews over the next few months.
Join the team — We’re looking for a social media intern! Information here. Please send your resume to DandelionRevolutionPress@gmail.com with the subject: Social Media Intern
We’re also looking for visual art to feature in our next issue! Our Spring “Transitions” issue featured the incredible artwork of Niki McQueen. If you are interested, or you have an artist in mind, please let us know!
Our editor Paige recently fell headfirst into the Anne of Green Gables series. She recognizes she’s 116 years late but hey, better late than never, right? If you haven’t gotten into this series yet, it’s a must! Here’s the essay that convinced Paige to finally give it a try: When I Met Anne by
.Our editor Ashini had the book “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi thrust into her hands by a young friend who said it was a must read and to “take it now!” Gyasi is an absolutely talented writer who brings 18th century Africa to life through her language and characters. The story follows the story of two sisters whose lives take different paths with the slave trade and the generations that come after. It’s a book that will stay with its readers for a long time because one can’t look at the present day political and social situations without understanding the history of African-Americans. As Gyasi says, “History follows us.” We have to look behind to see the road ahead.
Absolutely obsessed with this
SubStack. They coin themselves as a newsletter “by friends, for friends. We write about navigating the transformation from ‘twenty-something’ to ‘Adult with a capital A.’” In friendship, nothing is off-limits. Their raw and delicate discussions about the difficulty of making friends as an adult, preserving your identity as a new mom, and earnest attempt at being a good person makes us love their platform so very, very much. Here’s a piece to get started: Issue #35: how to help a friend through grief.- has officially launched this week, and we’re ALL IN! SmallStack is passionate about finding those SubStacks with fewer than 500 subscribers and showcase their work. It’s the place for writers with a smaller audience to be found, seen, and appreciated, and you can find their incredible library here (they’re working on expanding it as we speak!) Consider giving them a subscribe, so you can receive guest posts in your inbox, such as this: How just one exceptional reader changed my life by .
Let us know what you’ve been loving lately, too!
We are wishing you the best of Octobers! xoxo
